Stream for Refugees

Right now, someone who fled war is living on £7 a day in the UK, banned from working, waiting for safety. Your next stream can change that.

Whether you’re gaming, baking, creating art or chatting with your community – you can turn your screen time into real support for people rebuilding their lives in the UK.

Be a founding streamer. You’ll be part of the first wave building something completely new with Refugee Action. Help us pioneer a fresh way to stand in solidarity with refugees – and shape how we welcome people seeking safety for years to come.

Getting up your livestream is easy. Decide on what you’re going to stream, set up your fundraising page, and tell your followers using our social media templates. Check out the FAQs below, and use our resources to get you started.

Everything you need to know before your stream

1. Set your challenge

Stream for 3, 6, 12 or even 24 hours. Go solo or rally your community. Game, create makeup tutorials, cook, make music – whatever you love doing, do it for refugees.

2. Make it interactive

Keep your audience hooked with milestones and incentives:

– Dance for every £50 raised
– Bring your pet on screen at £100
– Take viewer questions for donations
– Play viewer-choice games when you hit targets
– Wear a ridiculous hat for the final hour if you reach your goal

Check out Tiltify’s guides on milestones and incentives for more ideas

3. Set up your page

Host your fundraiser on Tiltify or JustGiving and link it to Twitch, YouTube or your platform of choice. This guide shows you how. Need physical resources like t-shirts, posters or stickers? Let us know and we’ll send them over.

4. Go live and help make a difference

We’ll be cheering you on. Tell us about your stream and we’ll help make it a success.

Check out the resources below for everything you need for your stream. We’ve also got the physical goods, like t-shirts, posters and stickers. Let us know what you need, and we’ll get them sent over to you!

You can host your fundraiser on Tiltify or on JustGiving, and you can link your fundraising page to Twitch, Youtube or Mixer. Not sure how to make that happen? This guide can help.

We love hearing what you’re up to, so let us know and we’ll help you make your stream a success!

Take care of yourself. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated, keep healthy snacks nearby, and give your eyes a rest from the screen as much as you can. If you’re feeling unwell, it’s okay to stop.

Keep it welcoming. Make your stream a positive space for everyone. We ask that you avoid Mature-rated games or content depicting war or excessive violence – let’s keep the focus on building community, not division.

Did you know that less than 1% of the British population is made up of refugees and people seeking safety? While waiting for a decision on their claim, people seeking asylum have to live on less than £7 a day. At same time, people seeking safety are banned from working – so they’re trapped into a cycle of poverty. And over 70% of people who claim asylum here come from a country that was historically colonised or exploited by the UK – meaning that for many people, the decision to come to Britain was likely influenced by the legacy of the British Empire.

There is so much misinformation online about people seeking safety, but the facts tell a different story. Check out our FAQ page for more useful statistics on refugee issues.

Refugee Action supports refugees and people seeking safety in the UK. For more than 40 years we have welcomed refugees, campaigned for their rights, and offered support and advice to people who have had to flee their homes. We’re building a future where refugees have their rights upheld, receive a fair decision, essential support and help to thrive here, not just survive.

Your stream will be an act of solidarity with refugees. It’ll power our work with people seeking safety, meaning people across the country receive the support and care they need to rebuild their lives. Whether that’s through 121 casework, family wellbeing groups or employment sessions. And it will fuel our campaigning work that advocates for better housing for refugees, champions people seeking safety being able to work, and fights against the racist rhetoric that we see from the media, our politicians and the far right. It’s lifechanging stuff, and we’d love you and your stream to be a part of it.
